Perfect breakfast in town?

Good Ol' Days diner is my go-to for a hyper-local breakfast. Their fried chicken and buttermilk pancakes are a dream, and the throwback tunes complete the experience. If you're on the go, grab an iced dirty chai and a croissant from September. I love their pastries and the owner's commitment to our community.

Local market or supermarket?

For a market with a local touch, Farm to People is a true gem. They source high-quality produce, meats, and more directly from New York farmers and deliver them to your door, or you can pick up your order and enjoy a locally-sourced meal at their Brooklyn location. It's farm life meets city living!

Sit in or grab and go for lunch?

For a sit-down lunch, Peaches is a must-visit for its Southern soul food and classy atmosphere. Don't miss the shrimp po' boy! For a quick bite, grab a unique slice from Cuts and Slices – think crab and lobster or oxtail pizza.

Favourite shop?

Peace & Riot is my go-to for unique homeware, gifts, and those perfect finishing touches. I love their selection of handmade and imported pieces, especially the velvet and wood Christmas decor. My husband and I share a love for organic, earthy, African-inspired home decor with the shop owners, and we hope to have his House of Antwi homeware line sold there soon!

Art, Arcade or Apparel?

For me, it's the art, specifically the vibrant graffiti art and murals scattered throughout Bed-Stuy. From portraits of local icons like Jay-Z and Mos Def to thought-provoking social justice statements and captivating works by local artists like Alan Aine, a stroll through the neighborhood is a visual feast. Check out the Bed-Stuy Art Stroll for a curated mural tour!

A quiet spot to chill?

When I'm not chilling on our rooftop and enjoying the serene neighbourhood views, Marion Hopkins Park and Playground is my go-to for a quiet escape. It's perfect for picnics, reading, or shooting hoops with my husband.

Fun things to do?

Bed-Stuy's "Open Streets" are a must-experience, especially Tompkins Ave. From shopping at local businesses to enjoying wellness events, art shows, and block parties, there's always something fun happening. It's no wonder the neighborhood is so popular!

Best spot for people watching?

Speaking of Tompkins Ave, the best spot to people watch is on the corner of Tompkins Ave and Greene Ave at the Herbert Von King Park where summer concert series are held to bring the people in the community together, there’s a dog park for the pet lovers, family and kid friendly play areas, beautiful trails to take a walk or ride a bike, and the close-by elder community who come to hang out and play games on the outdoor chess tables.

A good night out in the city?

I would start out with a dinner at Saraghina’s on Lewis Ave to ramp up your energy, then a stroll to Therapy Wine Bar 2.0 for the best sangria in the neighbourhood over great convos, then dance the calories off with some reggae jams at Lover’s Rock.

Best place to stay?

The Akwaaba Mansion in Bed-Stuy caught my eye for its welcoming name and stunning architecture. Being married to a Ghanaian, the word "Akwaaba" (meaning "welcome" in the Akan language) resonated with me. The mansion's gloriously restored landmark architecture, blending Afrocentric and Italianate design elements, is truly captivating. Discovering that it was a bed & breakfast offering luxurious amenities sealed the deal, and our stay was an unforgettable, bucket-list-worthy experience.
