An Athenian Apartment That Brings the City’s Ancient Spirit Indoors

In Athens, architect Elli Athanasiadou turns a 1960s abandoned apartment into a calm oasis inspired by the city’s ancient spirit and blue skies.

In the heart of Athens, architect Elli Athanasiadou transforms a once-abandoned 1960s apartment into Kyano – a serene retreat inspired by the city’s marble, steel, and blue skies – blending history and modern calm above the bustle.

Inspired by the marble of the Panathenaic Stadium, the steel detailing of the Acropolis Museum, and the deep blue Athenian sky, the renovation of this top-floor 1960s apartment balances history, colour, and contemporary design. Designed by architect Elli Athanasiadou of Space Is Around Us, the reimagined layout merges kitchen, dining, and living areas into one open space, defined by a bold blue feature volume and white marble kitchen surfaces. Built-in cabinetry, integrated seating, and fluted glass windows enhance light, privacy, and storage, while exposed concrete columns and vintage-style fixtures subtly nod to the apartment’s mid-century origins. In the bedroom, a wall-to-wall wardrobe and lift-up bed maximise space without clutter, while a spacious terrace overlooking Athens’ two hills extends the living area, complete with a Jacuzzi, custom seating, and retractable awning. The result is a serene urban retreat that channels the city’s ancient spirit through modern design and timeless materials.
