A New Normal?

A new book highlights the most exciting sustainable home designs from around the world.

In 2022, a group of architects, designers and interior designers in the UK wrote an open letter to the UK design media, calling for it to up its game and stop publishing ‘mainly flashy, resource-intensive projects’. Two years later, Australian builder Matthew Carland published an open letter on Instagram calling for Australian architects to do the same: ‘Clients are demanding it, the planet is demanding it, and builders are demanding it. So, architects and designers, this one is on you'.

So writes Penny Craswell (a regular contributor to this very magazine) in the introduction to her latest book, The New Sustainable House. As Penny expands, “designing with the environment in mind is not ‘new’. What is new is the number of ways in which our houses can be made sustainable. No longer tied to one approach or a particular ‘look’”.

Indeed, the 25 featured designs come in all shapes, sizes and styles and urban examples range from an experiment in high-performance low-cost architecture in Japan to multi-level small footprint homes exploiting the benefits of reclaimed timber and cross-laminated timber in Vietnam and the UK respectively.

The New Sustainable House is published by Thames & Hudson and available internationally.
